Liani Yirka
North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
Curator of Special Populations
Liani Yirka has been with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences since 2003, fulfilling a number of roles. In her current position as the Curator of Special Populations, Liani provides an accessible and fulfilling experience to all visitors at the museum by increasing the accessibility of the museum, providing guided tactile tours, and taking aspect of the museum's educational programs offsite across the state of North Carolina. Her position is dedicated to reaching traditionally underserved audiences and those with special needs, including at-risk youth, pediatric patients and their families, senior citizens, those with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities, gifted and talented students, and the Hispanic/Latino community. This year, thanks to funding from IMLS, the museum and SAS have partnered to create an app that provides a fully accesible digital map and navigation tool for all the museum's visitors.
