Data analytics can help students, parents and educators make informed choices. But, for many people, it is a black box. Questions over what, and how, student data is collected, analyzed and used have led to an increasingly contentious debate over privacy and security. How can different education stakeholders reach a consensus on the acceptable use of student data to improve learning outcomes? How can companies provide better transparency about how this data is properly used? Objectives: 1) What kinds of data are central to helping us improve student learning? What data should not be collected? 2) What measures of privacy and security should schools and vendors be able to guarantee? 3) How do we alleviate fears of worst-case scenarios about the misuses of student data?
